2020 - Leap Year

• A normal year has 365 days.
• A Leap Year has 366 days (the extra day is the 29th of February).

How to know if it is a Leap Year:
Leap Years are any year that can be exactly divided by 4 (such as 2016, 2020, 2024, etc)
except if it can be exactly divided by 100, then it isn't (such as 2100, 2200, etc)
except if it can be exactly divided by 400, then it is (such as 2000, 2400)

Why do we have Leap Year?
Because the Earth rotates about 365.242375 times a year ...
... but a normal year is 365 days, ...
... so something has to be done to "catch up" the extra 0.242375 days a year.

Enjoy your "extra day" this year!

Chiropractic . . . Good for Mom and Baby!

Chiropractic is widely known to be an effective treatment for general back pain, but did you know it is also beneficial for pregnant women?  The mother’s body undergoes a myriad of changes during pregnancy to accommodate the growing baby and to prepare for giving birth.  During pregnancy, it is even more vital than usual for the woman’s nervous system to be functioning properly to optimize the body most effectively.

The sudden growth of the belly changes the woman’s posture.  As the pelvis softens and spreads to accommodate the baby, it can become out of alignment.  In some cases, this can affect the baby’s position making delivery more difficult or even lead to a c-section.

These are just a few of the reasons that women often have pain during pregnancy.  But pregnant women shouldn’t suffer needlessly!  Chiropractic care can help minimize and even alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with pregnancy.  Some of the benefits of prenatal chiropractic care include:

·         Healthier pregnancy

·         Reduced nausea

·         Relief of back, neck and joint pain without medication

·         Lower risk of cesarean delivery

·         Reduced time of labor and delivery

·         Overall improved comfort during pregnancy

·         Reduced risk of breech delivery

Chiropractic care is safe throughout pregnancy.  All chiropractors have been trained to treat pregnant women through the various stages of pregnancy.  Techniques are modified as needed to provide the best results while keeping mom and baby safe and comfortable.

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor of chiropractic about how they can help you to have a healthy pregnancy with lower complications.  A combination of proper exercise, stretches and chiropractic care can help you enjoy the anticipation of your new baby without some of the concerns and pains often associated with pregnancy.

Maximize your medical benefits before 2019 runs out

  • Have you met your Deductible for 2019 or even the Maximum Out Of Pocket expense?

  • Do you have Flexible Spending Account money that won't roll over at the end of the year?

Most medical insurance benefits reset at the beginning of a new year. It's crazy knowing that 2020 is just 7 weeks away!

If you have questions regarding your benefits or if you want to schedule an appointment with Dr. Hawkins, give us a call at 615-302-4747.

Maximizing your medical benefits should be at the top of your end of the year to-do list! It’s easy to start focusing on 2020 as open enrollment gears up. But reviewing your 2019 medical benefits may prevent you from accidentally leaving some money behind.

Here are a few tips for reviewing your 2019 medical benefits.

Have you and your dependents used your preventative services coverage?

Depending on your health plan, you may have a set of preventative services – such as check-ups, screenings and routine immunizations – that are 100 percent covered. For women, your mammogram screening and OB-GYN exam might be covered. If you’re on Medicare, your annual wellness visit might be available at no cost to you.

Be sure to take advantage of these annual benefits and consider scheduling an appointment before the end of the year.

Make the most of your deductibles and out-of-pocket maximums.

Deductibles, which reset on January 1, determine the cost you pay out of pocket for health care services before your insurance kicks in. If you’ve met your deductible for 2019, you might want to consider any elective procedures you’ve been delaying, for example a colonoscopy.

It’s still important to get an estimate on your out-of-pocket costs before scheduling any appointments. Services might have co-pays or coinsurance until you reach your out-of-pocket maximum, or the amount you pay for medical services in a calendar year.

If you’ve met your out-of-pocket maximum or may reach it this month, consider scheduling those appointments or services. Once you have reached this dollar amount, most plans pay 100 percent of the allowed amount.

Have you put your tax-free dollars to work?

In additional to reviewing your medical insurance coverage, don’t forget about the money you already have to pay for medical expenses.

If you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) with any money left, use it before you lose it. Your FSA dollars have a shelf life and balances won’t carry over from year-to-year. Thus, it’s important to check your plan and review what eligible expenses are covered.

Unlike your FSA, if you have a Health Reimbursement Accounts (HRA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) your balance typically rolls over. If your employer provides a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) to help pay for health care expenses, the money stays with you while you’re employed with the company. Planning on making a career change next year? If so, consider using whatever’s left in your HRA. Make sure to review the list of eligible purchases as some employers specify what you can use these dollars on.

Squirreling away those tax-free dollars in a Health Savings Account (HSA)? Keep at it! If you do happen to have some last-minute expenses this year, you can use your HSA on deductibles, co-payments, coinsurance and other eligible health care costs. Money in these accounts roll over from year-to-year and the dollars stay with you no matter your employer.

The end of the year is fast approaching, but there’s still time to get the most out of your medical benefits by December 31!

Sciatica Pain?

If you’ve recently had pain down the back of your leg, WebMD or your neighbor probably told you that you have “Sciatica”. However, the term sciatica simply means you have pain along the sciatic nerve.

Sciatica is a symptom of something that is causing that pain, just like a runny nose is a symptom of allergies, an infection or a virus.

So now that we know what sciatica is, a better question would be “What is causing my sciatica”? There are multiple conditions that can cause sciatica. The most common causes are:
• Spinal Stenosis
• Lumbar Disc Herniation, Bulge or Prolapse
• Joint Dysfunction
• Piriformis Syndrome
• Peripheral Nerve Entrapment (Nerve irritation at a place other than your spine)
• Muscle Imbalances in the pelvis or leg

All of these conditions can cause low back or pelvis pain that goes into the buttock and down the back of the leg.
A thorough review of the patient’s history and a physical examination by a quality physician can help determine the cause of your sciatica symptoms. Whether it is any of the above conditions, they usually respond well to focused manual care in conjunction with rehab exercises. The majority of “sciatica” issues do not require surgery.

Once your health is restored, simple changes to your daily routine and incorporating specific exercises can eliminate sciatica once and for all. This type of instruction should be incorporated along with your treatment to facilitate the treatment process.

If you are experiencing sciatica, give our office a call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Hawkins.
